Elvish
Creating a Language

Where is Elvish Spoken?
Sentence structure
Elvish is for the most part an agglutinative language which means that new words or grammatical forms are created by adding affixes to existing word stems. As an ancient people, the Dawn and Dusk elves have seen a lot of evolution and with it, new words and forms have been created as the rise of civilizations took place.
WORD ORDER:
Subject + Object + Verb (SOV)
”The elf (S) the sword (O) wields(V).”
”Okka ya tenhaaj dolanhar.” would mean something along the lines of “The elf holds the shield.”
Adjectives and possessive construction would come before the nouns for clarity and flow:
”Mi ya lofte glan” (We the air path walk)
Due to the nature of the language, some compound words are formed by taking roots.
”Kopnogast” is Riverbank side.
Typically as an elvish speaker, one bases the merge or glue between words on the meaning for a natural flow of speech.
QUESTIONS:
Typically, questions in Elvish involve the sentence staying in the same order with a question particle at the end or front.
As an example -
”Okka ya tenhaaj dolahar ka?”
would be “Does the elf hold the shield?”
sample sentances
Here is how the syntax could work in practice:
“Mi ya tvolo delar.” = We see the thing.
“Pa ya jezovo aksiar.” = He lives by the lake.
“Thi ya dunna denear.” = You have sinned before the priestess.
Although Elves exist all across the world of Colabria, Elvish hails from and predominently is spoken in the Elvish regions of the Dusk Moor and the Dawn Vale. This is where the the Olovoan Empire and Kingdom of Lun consistently seek to uphold their herritage and keep the language strong.
Languages can be very intimidating for anyone, and that’s just talking about the ones that actually exist! However, Game Masters and World Builders frequently discover that in the absence of linguistic diversity within their worlds, the connection between the world and its interactors is quickly lost. As we ourselves live in a multifaceted and culturally diverse world, we need reflections of that in the worlds we dive into in order to truly experience them. So, because we seem to love making more work for ourselves, we’re developing (at least in part) a fantasy language for the Elves of the Dusk Moor and Dawn Vale. By incorporating Elvish phrases into dialogues between Elves and players, you, as game facilitators, can truly immerse them in the experience and elevate the awesomeness of your game days.
We are not language experts so please excuse its crude nature, and thank you for sticking with us throughout it.
Grammar Rules / Trends
If a word is ending “-ly” in the common tongue, you’ll often find it ending in “-ala” in Elvish.
For example, “Death” is “Iska” where “Dealthly” is “Iskala”.
If a word prefix is “un-” something, for example “Undead”, then the common change is the addition of “Ne-” to the word. So the above example, “Undead”, takes the past tense of “To Die” (“Iska”) and combines with this change to form “Neiska”.
Verb Rules
A word ending in “-ar” is more often than not a root word for a verb. For example “Delar” means “To See”.
When a verb becomes past tense, “-ar” changes to “-a”.
For example, where “Ledenar” means “To Split”, if something had split, it would become “Ledena”.
If the verb is being used in a present tense action, (“-ing”), the verb ending changes from “-ar” to “-avi”. For example where “Ressiar” means “To Set”, “Ressiavi” means that something is setting.
When a verb becomes future tense, the suffix “-ar” changes to “-as”.
For example, where “Kinnar” means “To Kiss” if someone declares they will kiss in the future, the verb becomes “Kinnas”.
if the verb is being used to describe someone as being that thing, when “-er” or “-or” is being added to the end, the “-ar” is replaced with “-h”. For example the verb “Laerotar”, meaning “To Protect”, becomes “Laeroth”, meaning “Protector”.
